A Message Type is the starting point for any new Act On It alert and the template for how it looks and behaves. It defines what the alert contains, how it is delivered, and what actions are available to recipients. Once configured, the same Message Type can be reused across different notifications, Flows, and scenarios.

When you install Act On It, several example Message Types are included to help you get started. To see them, navigate to the Message Types tab and switch to the All list view. These examples are fully editable and are a good way to explore how Message Types are structured before creating your own.
Message Types control the what and how of an alert: the content, the layout, and the actions available to recipients. They do not control who receives the alert or when it is sent. That is handled separately by notifications and Flows.
Once a Message Type is configured it can be triggered in one of two ways:
Notifications and Flows handle the who and when: which users should be alerted, under what conditions, and at what point action is needed.
